The National Youth Assembly on AI was organised by the Government as part of its aim to demystify this technology. As part of the Government's national AI strategy, young people from across Ireland are being invited to share their thoughts on the tech and how it can be used. Young delegates are today (12 October) attending the National Youth Assembly on Artificial Intelligence at the Tangent ideas workspace in Trinity College Dublin (TCD). These delegates are being joined by guest delegates from groups such as Spun Out and Foróige. Together, they will discuss AI and present their recommendations and thoughts to the Government.

How is The UK planning to dominate AI even further?
The UK recently published its National AI strategy that outlines its vision to maintain, build on and sustain its past position within AI. The intention is to build the most "pro-innovation regulatory environment in the world" that drives AI prosperity within the nation and helps solve some of the pressing problems the UK and the world are facing currently such as climate change. The country already has had a long and exceptional history in AI -- from Alan Turing's early work-through to DeepMind's recent feats such as AlphaFold. UK comes in the top nations in terms of AI startups, research, and private capital invested within AI. In 2020, it ranked third in the world for private investment into AI companies, behind only the USA and China.

UK sets out proposals for new AI rulebook to unleash innovation and boost public trust in the technology
New plans for regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) will be published today to help develop consistent rules to promote innovation in this groundbreaking technology and protect the public. It comes as the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill is introduced to Parliament which will transform the UK's data laws to boost innovation in technologies such as AI. The Bill will seize the benefits of Brexit to keep a high standard of protection for people's privacy and personal data while delivering around £1 billion in savings for businesses. Artificial Intelligence refers to machines which learn from data how to perform tasks normally performed by humans. For example, AI helps identify patterns in financial transactions that could indicate fraud and clinicians diagnose illnesses based on chest images.

National AI Strategy - AI Action Plan
Like the steam engine, electricity, or the internet, Artificial Intelligence is a general purpose technology – with the potential to revolutionise every aspect of our lives, help realise our ambitions to be a science superpower, and to foster economic growth across the UK. The UK excels at AI – from scientific research, where we rank third in the world for number of academic journal citations; to investment – receiving more investment in AI companies than France and Germany combined in 2021. As a Government, we are committed to unlocking the enormous benefits of AI across our economy and society. That is why we have invested over £2.3 billion in AI since 2014, which has been bolstered year-on-year by ambitious announcements such as the creation of the NHS AI Lab to drive use of AI in improving healthcare, to the creation of Turing AI World-leading Researcher Fellowships, to ensure the UK attracts and retains the best and brightest AI talent. Last September, we also published the National AI Strategy – a 10-year vision to ensure the UK is the best place to start and grow an AI business and to strengthen our position as a global AI leader.
UK government positions itself away from EU on AI regulation while testing how light touch it can go
The UK government launched a trio of documents concerning AI on 18 July, all with the general purpose of fostering innovation, increasing public trust in the technology and giving clarity to business. But for the detail that will allow this, there is a wait until at least the end of the year when the government will publish its white paper on AI regulation, itself another pause for reflection. The department responsible is clear on the UK approach differing from that of the EU as regulation will be spread across six bodies rather than one dedicated regulator in the EU, but less clear on what the regulation will be for now other than so light-touch that it may just be guidance. In the meantime, one of the documents calls for views on regulation over the next 10 weeks. Last September, a trio of agencies (the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the Department for Business, Engergy and Industrial Strategy and the Office for Artificial Intelligence) released the National AI Strategy guidance which promised useful developments such as a transparency standard for AI coding, something of a world-first (subsequently published in December).

Ireland gets its first AI ambassador. Will other countries follow suit?
Ireland has appointed Dr Patricia Scanlon as its first AI Ambassador to facilitate the Government's AI adoption strategy launched last year. Patricia is the founder and former executive chairperson of the speech recognition tech firm called SoapBox Labs. Ireland's'AI – Here For Good' strategy focuses on how technology can be utilised in human-centric and ethical ways to improve the lives of its citizens. Dr Scanlon, a member of the Enterprise Digital Advisory Forum (EDAF), will work closely with the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. She will work on demystifying AI and promoting the positive impacts it can have in areas such as transport, agriculture, health and education.

Artificial Intelligence in the UAE
In the third of a series of blogs from our global offices, we provide a overview of key trends in artificial intelligence in the United Arab Emirates. What is the UAE's strategy for Artificial Intelligence? In 2017, the UAE appointed a Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, H.E. Omar Bin Sultan Al Olama, and issued a national AI strategy seeking to become one of the world leaders in AI by 2031. To implement the national AI strategy, the UAE established an Office for Artificial Intelligence, which is responsible for enhancing government performance by investing in AI technologies and tools for application across various sectors. The UAE Council for Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain was also established to provide advice to the government on the adoption and use of AI, to design policies that promote an AI-friendly ecosystem, to advance research and to promote private–public collaboration in that space.
